This program encourages families to read 1,000 books together before the child enters kindergarten. Research has shown that reading to and with children before their schooling begins is an effective way to prepare them for independent reading.
Participation in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is easy and the program's only end date is when your child enters kindergarten, so there is no pressure to finish by a certain time.
Any reading counts! You can re-read books, count books you've heard at storytime, listen to audio books, read eBooks, etc.
For every 100 books you read, your child will earn a small prize that you can pick up in the library. At 1,000 books they will receive a certificate of completion and a book to keep.
